Appel à candidature - Financement pour doctorat sur la crise alimentaire

POSITION AVAILABLE:  Funded PhDship
TITLE: Toward Solutions to the Global Food Crisis

The world faces a huge food security challenge over the next generation. We must develop agricultural technologies, storage and distributions systems, and consumer habits capable of feeding 9 billion people in a way that does not sacrifice vital ecosystem services such as wildlife habitat and carbon sequestration.  We must do this under climate change and rising energy costs. However, while there is a consensus on the scale of the problem, there is no consensus on the nature of the solution. Some argue that boosting yields through biotechnology is necessary. Others suggest that biotechnologies will exacerbate things that are wrong with modern food systems and advocate for local and alternative systems. One reason for this disagreement is that while food security is a global problem, the optimal blend of solutions will vary place to place.

The overarching objective of this research is to evaluate how different solutions will have different effects depending on the local context. To meet this objective, the successful candidate will compare a wide range of possible “future food systems” in possible case study regions in Canada. The specific number of case studies, the exact methods used, and the geographic location will be determined in consultation with the successful candidate.
